R. Lorraine Samuel - I am a pediatric nurse, trained and graduated from Children's Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, Mass. I also hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services, and am a certified Elementary Health teacher and Community AIDS Educator. I also have a Day Care certificate and have trained as a Center Accreditation Validator for NAEYC. Over the past twenty years, I have had extensive experience working with young children, their families, and teachers around a number of health-related issues. As a staff nurse of intensive care, special care and newborn nurseries in Rochester New York, I gained infant/toddler experience. I also worked in many child care settings in various capacities as a teacher for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers; assistant director; and bus driver. These experiences were vital as I attempted to create, along with an incorporated board of directors, a child care center, specializing in infant/toddler care, called Little Peoples Learning Center. I have also held positions as a family day care coordinator; and a staff developer for a school department, training elementary teachers in comprehensive health education. Additionally, I have worked within the Head Start community for eight years, as one of the first home visitors/family advocates, as a health coordinator, and now as a health technical assistance specialist. As the TASC health specialist, I have presented workshops at local regional, and national conferences. As an Early Childhood Health & Safety instructor I have had numerous experiences teaching First Aid and CPR. I have also taught such courses as Child Development and Health Education at local colleges. Recently, I developed the curriculum for a course entitled Developing Health & Safety Awareness in Children that was approved by Office for Children for continuing education units. In my high school years I was involved in instruction of the trumbone, voice and piano. My daughter who currently attends Bridgewater State College spent most of her public school education first with the clarinet and then moved to the bass clarinet. My mom is an avid piano player and dabbles a little with organ music.
